How we got our own McLean business recommended by ChatGPT

On September 11, 2026, none of the AI engines we asked mentioned Imhauser Technologies. On September 23, 2026, asked "where can I do AI optimization for my business here in McLean", ChatGPT named Imhauser Technologies, described its AI Search Optimization service for local businesses in McLean and Tysons, and linked the service page. In between, the site became easy for an AI engine to read, verify and quote, and the business became consistent across the directories those engines cite.

This is one engine and one question. It is not a ranking and nothing guarantees it stays. Here is what we did, in order, and what we are still tracking.

The baseline

On September 11, 2026 we asked ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini the questions a McLean business owner would ask about AI optimization and about websites. Imhauser Technologies did not appear in any of the answers.

That is where most local businesses start. The engines were not ignoring us on purpose; they had nothing they could state about us with confidence.

What we changed on the site

Everything below is live on imhauser.com and can be checked. Part of it went live on September 10, the day before the baseline, and had not been picked up yet; the rest followed between September 11 and 22.

  • A robots.txt that names the AI crawlers. GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User (OpenAI), ClaudeBot and Claude-SearchBot (Anthropic), PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and Bingbot are each allowed by name.
  • An llms.txt file: a plain-text summary, written for language models, of what the company does, for whom, where, and at which URL.
  • Structured data on every page. One schema.org graph per page: an Organization (also typed ProfessionalService) with the McLean address, phone number, service area and profile links; a Person for the founder; a Service node on each service page; a FAQPage built from every visible FAQ; breadcrumbs; and an Article node on each insights piece.
  • A page for each town we serve. Eight town pages (McLean, Tysons, Vienna, Great Falls, Falls Church, Arlington, Reston and Fairfax), each written from what is different about that town, each with its own FAQ and its own Place in the structured data.
  • Answer-first articles. Insights pieces that give the direct answer in the first paragraph, so an engine can lift it: how a Northern Virginia business gets found by ChatGPT, what AI search optimization costs, who builds websites for small businesses in McLean, and more.
  • Indexing wired up. A sitemap generated from the built pages and an IndexNow key, so every deploy tells Bing, which ChatGPT search reads, which pages changed.

What we changed off the site

AI engines do not only read your website. When they recommend a local business they cross-check it against directories and review sites, and they often cite those instead of the business's own pages. A business that looks the same everywhere is one an engine can name with confidence.

So we claimed or completed the listings the engines lean on: Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, the Better Business Bureau, Yelp, Clutch, Patch and the TechBehemoths directory for McLean, each with the same name, McLean address and phone number. The LinkedIn, BBB, Clutch and Patch profiles are also listed in the Organization's structured data, so the site and the listings point at each other.

The result

On September 23, 2026 we asked ChatGPT "where can I do AI optimization for my business here in McLean". It named Imhauser Technologies, described it as offering AI Search Optimization for local businesses in McLean and Tysons, and linked the service page.

That is one engine and one question. AI answers vary by engine, by wording and over time, and the same question can come back differently next week. We are tracking a panel of questions across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity every week, and we are not claiming anything for the engines until they show it.

What this means for your business

The same process, run on your site: a baseline of what the engines say about you and your competitors today, the structured data and answer-first content that let them quote you, your listings made consistent, and weekly tracking of the questions your customers ask. It works with the website you already have.

It starts with a free AI visibility check. Send your website address, and within two business days you get a short written report of what ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity say about you and two competitors.
